Resource hints tell the browser what to fetch early. Use a decision table for dns-prefetch, preconnect, preload, and prefetch; preload the LCP image when it is not discoverable in HTML; keep font preloads tight; and verify with dated lab runs.
Lazy loading images saves bandwidth below the fold, but `loading="lazy"` on the LCP image delays Largest Contentful Paint. Here is when to use the attribute, when to omit it, and how to check lab and field results.
WordPress 6.8 ships speculative loading (prefetch by default). Plugins that prerender more eagerly can improve next-page feel, but they can also burn bandwidth and muddy first-visit Core Web Vitals. Here is how agencies choose settings without guessing.
Time to First Byte includes more than server work. Name Unattributed Navigation Overhead (UNO) in client reports so the residual after redirect, DNS, connection, and request timing is not silently blamed on origin PHP.
Enable Brotli with a gzip fallback for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript so text assets shrink on the wire without double-compressing images or burning origin CPU that quietly hurts TTFB and PageSpeed scores.
Automated web performance monitoring means scheduled lab and field checks, budgets, alerts, and history, not a bot that rewrites your site, and not a one-off PageSpeed Insights paste.
When Cloudflare challenges or blocks PageSpeed Insights automation, lab scores stop describing the client site. Diagnose Bot Fight Mode, allowlists, and origin versus edge so monitoring stays honest.
Set Cache-Control by content type: long immutable TTLs for fingerprinted assets, revalidatable HTML, and CDN rules that match origin headers so TTFB and LCP gains survive the next deploy.
YouTube iframes often drive Cumulative Layout Shift, but cross-origin content limits what you can attribute and fix. Reserve the slot, use a facade or lite embed, and verify with lab plus field monitoring.
Chrome is moving to a two-week Stable cadence from Chrome 153. A 28-day CrUX window can blend multiple browser majors, so field LCP can shift with no app deploy. Here is how to annotate browser releases, set sample thresholds, and report population mix honestly.
When CDN and theme work fail to reduce TTFB, the bottleneck is often origin compute: WP-Cron storms, cold PHP workers, missing object cache, database load, and backup plugins during peak. Here is a server-side checklist for WordPress sites.
Safari 26.2 exposes Largest Contentful Paint and Event Timing so you can measure LCP and INP for Safari users. Here is how to collect those metrics, and which Chrome-only reports still leave iOS out.
